Haymarket brings Stuff and FourFourTwo mags to Poland

Britain’s enthusiast magazine publisher Haymarket has agreed to licence its gadget title Stuff to the Ginza Media Group of Poland as of September 9, 2010. The cover price is set at 9,90 PLN (or about €2,50) and the print run is 50 000.

Stuff magazine is the UK’s cutting-edge guide to gadgets, gear and technology and is Earth’s most renowned gadget compendium.  Inspirational, witty and friendly, it has become the best-selling gadget magazine in the world. There are 22 international editions, all rammed to the virtual rafters with the world’s coolest kit.  Stuff also has: a new multimedia website, Stuff.tv ; a brand new mobile site, Stuff.tv/mobile ; an annual exhibition; and two of the Britain’s most successful podcasts.  Stuff’s editors travel the world to experience first-hand the very latest in entertainment technology and culture to ensure that all its features are at the cutting edge of the gadgets world.

Meanwhile, Haymarket also reached a licence agreement with Ginza for  its football (soccer) mag FourFourTwo to be published in Poland from September 15 on. The cover price will be 4,90 PLN (€1,30) and the print run is 30 000.

Playboy introduces “Gold Edition” in France

The September issue of French Playboy, published under license by 1633, is themed “Gold edition”.  It will be the “fil conducteur” throughout the whole issue…anything that has to do with gold or is golden (like the silence for instance!).

The “Gold edition” features naked models covered in gold paint ( it is Playboy after all), an interview of 60’s legendary designer Paco Rabanne, whose most recent masterpiece is a golden ornament work donned by the singer Shakira in parts of the “Gypsy” music video.


Newsweekly “Veja” launches iPad version in Brazil

An iPad edition of Editora Abril’s Brazilian newsweekly Veja debuted on September 4 in the Apple App store and shot immediately to the number one position among free apps. The new app is powered by the Holland-based Woodwing, a digital media solutions company.

Veja currently circulates about 1,1 million copies per week and has more than 8 million readers per issue.  Click to read the official Woodwing press release in English.

Editor of Indonesia’s defunct version of Playboy magazine insists he was never in the porn business

The editor of Indonesia’s defunct version of Playboy magazine, Erwin Arnada, insists he was never in the pornography business.  But now, he is forced to hide because of a two-year jail sentence hanging over his head and vigilantes vowing to track him down wherever he is.

The local edition of the U.S. men’s magazine, which began publication in 2006, was relatively tame, and conspicuously free of nudity. But faced with violent protests by hard-line Muslim groups, it soon folded, while Mr. Arnada fended off a succession of criminal charges.  The second issue of Playboy Indonesia, still baring zero nudity or lingerie, had come out after the publisher had moved its offices to the island of Bali, two months after Islamic hardliners had attempted to trash its Jakarta offices following the magazine’s first edition.

Things had gone quiet until this August, with the surprise announcement that the Indonesian Supreme Court, in an unpublicized verdict last year, had found him guilty of indecency. The New York Times reported on the subject early this month in an article named “From Hiding, Indonesian Defends Free Expression“.

Playboy Indonesia was published by Velvet Silver Media and had a print run of about 100 000 copies, according to Wikipedia.  It was the first issue of Playboy to launch in a Muslim country since the Turkish edition folded in the mid-90’s (NB: Turkey is a secular country although Islam is the dominant religion there).

USA: Wired magazine cover declares “web is dead”

The September issue of America’s favorite geek magazine Wired just came out with a bang.  People, “the web is dead” reads the cover!

Wow! I know that’s going to make my mother-in-law happy since she’s still trying to figure out how to get an “email number” (lol). Anyway, that’s a bold statement to blast in oversized letters on a bright red magazine cover…

Also, after reading some more about it on TechCrunch,  the whole methodology Wired used seems to be totally inadequate.  The statement is deemed inaccurate by TechCrunch because Wired lumped all YouTube videos under “Video” (with Skype video calls and Netflix movie streaming) and not as part of the “Web”  (as in seen via a web browser).  But that rationale makes up for a catchier headline I guess!

USA: ESPN the Magazine is introducing new single-topic format per issue

ESPN the Magazine is introducing a new format with the issue that hit newsstands on August 13 in the U.S., devoting the bulk of each issue to a single sports topic or theme.

“Rather than continue to try to keep up with every single thing going on in the sports world, we decided to take a deep dive into single topics,” said Gary Belsky, editor-in-chief. This seems to signal that ESPN the Magazine’s Body issue featuring Serena Williams on the cover was a big success. It also signals closer ties between the magazine, which is moving from New York to the Bristol, CT, headquarters – and campus of ESPN – next year and the rest of the company’s various sports TV, radio and Web sites.

The first issue in the new format for ESPN the Magazine is the College Football Kickoff and will be followed in two weeks by the NFL Preview Issue, both of which are among the best-selling regular issues for rival Sports Illustrated each year.

Belsky said he doesn’t think ESPN the Magazine’s new single-subject focus will alienate readers since the upfront sections “Go” and “Play” will still carry 30 to 40 pages devoted to sports of all kinds in each issue. “We actually don’t think it’s a gamble,” said Belsky. “We think we’ve covered all our bases.”

Esquire to launch Malaysia edition in April 2011

The announcement on Wednesday by Hearst Magazines International (HMI) President/CEO (since 2009) Duncan Edwards of the April 2011 launch of Esquire/Malaysia marks Esquire‘s 22nd overseas edition!  There was only a handful in 1989 when Edwards’ predecessor George Green took the job.

Hearst’s partner in Esquire Malaysia is Mongoose Publishing, which also publishes Time Out, Newsweek and Nat Geo among others in Malaysia. The editor will be Sam Coleman and the language is English (widely spoken in Malaysia).  Esquire Malaysia will have an initial print run of 30 000 copies, a minimum of 164 pages and a cover price of RM12.

Esquire’s sophisticated and stylish approach to covering the subjects and stories that young men care most about translates incredibly well around the world” Edwards said. “We’re confident that its mix of strong storytelling, award-winning reporting, humor and panache will make it a big success in Malaysia, as it has in other countries.”

International editions usually run their own editorial and marketing shows, but in 2008 Esquire Russia adapted the “ultimate bachelor pad” that has been a staple for the U.S. flagship since its 70th anniversary in 2003.  This fall, the “Esquire House” will be in the Hollywood Hills overlooking Los Angeles.

With this launch, Esquire will be available in 7 Asian countries and 22 in total worldwide.
